Cassandra Lewis
3-6th Team Teacher, Regenerative Agriculture Specialist
Education & Experience:
In 2003, I moved with my family to Madison County, North Carolina, to establish a sustainable, small-scale market and dairy goat farm. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, I began my career as a field archaeologist, working with cultural resource management firms. My academic background also includes graduate-level coursework in City and Regional Planning and Geographic Information Science, which deepened my understanding of land use and sustainable practices. Since settling in Madison County, I have dedicated nearly two decades to raising dairy goats—specializing in breeding, milking, and showing—as well as raising chickens and rabbits. My passion for sustainable agriculture has guided both my farming and teaching careers. I began teaching in 2009 at the Madison County Community Learning Center, where I also helped develop and lead “Farm Camp,” a hands-on summer program for K–5 students focused on animal care and farm life. In 2016, I became the Lead Elementary Agriculture Teacher at Woodson Branch Nature School, where I helped created and implement a regenerative agriculture curriculum. My program emphasizes soil health, biodiversity, cover cropping, and rotational grazing, all while fostering student leadership through student-led gardens. I have consistently integrated real-world farming practices into engaging science and project-based learning experiences. Beyond agriculture, my teaching experience spans 1st–5th grade science and instructional coaching for both elementary and middle school educators. I am deeply committed to collaborative teaching and curriculum development, working closely with colleagues, students, and families to create a meaningful and inclusive learning environment. At the core of my professional journey is a deep love for teaching students of all ages about animals, ecosystems, and the vital importance of regenerative agriculture
Teaching Philosophy:
Tell me and I’ll forget, teach me and I’ll remember, involve me and I’ll learn.
Favorite thing about kids:
I love seeing their faces light up and their smile widen when they simply interact with a rabbit and the seed they planted emerges from the soil.
Favorite thing about working at MCCLC / WBNS:
Teaching children about animals, plants and dirt!! Being part of a collaborative teaching team truly inspires me to be a stronger human.
