Douglas Dilhomick

Head of School

Education & Experience:

Since 2012, Douglas Dilhomick has been dedicated to implementing engaging lessons and developing academic programs that support students from culturally diverse and learner backgrounds. While earning his Master of Education degree from Temple University, Douglas began his teaching career in Philadelphia, where he worked in a range of educational institutions and extended his role to support high-needs schools across the city.

In 2021, Douglas took his teaching expertise abroad, working with children and adults in the Yucatán and Chiapas regions of México. Locally, he served as the ML/EL Consultant for a charter school in Swannanoa and has also worked as the 5th-Grade Lead Teacher at Woodson Branch Nature School for two consecutive years.

Beyond the classroom, Douglas has contributed to educational development through administrative and leadership roles such as founding and supporting tutoring centers, developing and monitoring programs, evaluating SPEAK tests, designing teacher-training initiatives, and facilitating educational workshops both domestically and internationally. His wide range of experience continues to inform his practice, focusing on innovation and awareness of community and culture here at Woodson Branch Nature School.

Teaching Philosophy:

No two students are alike. I believe in embracing the diversity of the classroom and honoring the individuality of each learner. Every student arrives with their own strengths and challenges, creating a dynamic environment for peer learning and collective growth. In my classroom, students are encouraged to collaborate, learn from one another, and develop a shared understanding of the world around them. As an Educator and Head of School, I view myself as a vital part of the community—working to ensure that the impact of classroom learning extends beyond school walls. It is of the utmost importance that students feel safe to learn, make mistakes, ask questions, build relationships, and ultimately succeed I am excited to continue applying professional strategies while upholding the OWL Code during the 2025–2026 school year at Woodson Branch Nature School.

Favorite thing about kids:

After years of teaching adults, I find tremendous joy in working with young learners. What I appreciate most is their curiosity and openness—children have a unique ability to approach problems without bias and are unafraid to ask meaningful questions. Watching students connect the dots and experience those "aha" moments is incredibly rewarding. As educators, we have the privilege and responsibility to ensure that our impact on children is positive, lasting, and empowering.

Favorite thing about working at MCCLC / WBNS:

It’s truly heartening to know that we all share a deep love for nature. The natural rhythm of the Earth gives us a unique way to connect—with the world around us and with one another. I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside educators who are deeply committed to their work and consistently go above and beyond to enrich the lives of our students. Watching our students grow and seeing our school move in such a positive direction brings me a great sense of joy and purpose.
