ARMADILLOS 1/8-1/12

The Armadillos had a great (and soggy) week.

This week in:

Phonics We studied the Long O sound including the letter combinations oa, ow, o, and o_e that make the Long O. We also discussed the letter blends ow and ou as in 'now' and 'house'. Our spelling/sight words included the words-old, no, not, of, off, so, and home. Additionally, students learned the difference between common and proper nouns.

Math

We practiced adding 1-digit numbers whose sum is greater than 10 by first making ten, as well as, adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number within 20 by pulling out the ten and adding the ones. Likewise, students learned to subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number within 20 where there are enough ones (no renaming), and to subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number when there are not enough ones by subtracting from ten.

We also completed our Math assessments with the exception of absent students.

ELA

In ELA we continue silent reading and sentence sheet reading. When ELA assessments are complete, hopefully next week if everyone is there, we will return to reading pullouts with new reading groups.

We are starting our fictional reading/writing unit. This week we talked about the who? what? when? where? and why? of stories with a focus on story characters. We explored the who? when? where? why? and what? of several fun fantasy books and discussed the difference between main characters and supporting characters. The students created their own fictional characters and shared them with the class.

Centering

In centering, we are talking about resolutions and goals this month. We are also working on using deep breathing to help get our bodies and minds ready for learning. Our 'Words of the Day' this week were- resolution, excel, goal, and strive. I posted this fun riddle for the kids and let them think on it for a few days. The answer is simply the letter 'E' but, their ideas were much wiser :)
